Background | NATO utilizes wireless communications standards (predominantly through the use STANAGs) to achieve interoperability. Whereas in the civilian telecommunications world standards such as 5G New Radio have an active technical and business case contribution-based approach using 18-month release cycles for new features to be added.
5G and 6G has been identified as an emerging and disruptive technology in NATO, however the underpinning strength to 5G and in turn 6G is the vibrant and technically focused 3GPP standards community behind these technologies.
Within this RTG, the members will explore within the NATO construct how the communications standards process within NATO could be improved, therefore this RTG will look at the processes within NATO, including the Legal and Intellectual Property aspects, to develop, field and deploy enhanced wireless communications standards.
As this is a very broad scope, the RTG will focus on features related to improvements to make 5G features and in turn 6G aligned with NATO operational need.

Objectives | This RTG will focus on developing robust, secure and enduring communications for NATO, it will aim to create approaches within NATO whereby fundamental scientific activities from within IST and the Collaborative Programme of Work can be exploited directly into communications standards. |
